Hidden skirting boards made of aluminum: we improve interior design
If you are looking for ways to enhance the interior design of your home or office, you may want to consider installing a concealed skirting board. Recently, the skirting board flush with the wall, which gives more space for the implementation of any design ideas, is becoming more and more popular. The elegant, minimalist look allows you to install hidden doors in the room, create the effect of a levitating wall and arrange furniture in such a way that there is more space in the room.
What is a hidden aluminum slat
Hidden plinth - slats recessed into the wall, which are mounted flush with the wall and create a perfectly smooth, seamless appearance. Perfect for rooms that require alignment of the walls. This solution allows you to create one complete plane with the wall, hide all shortcomings and create an attractive visual effect. It is definitely worth buying such skirting boards for hidden doors, because overhanging bars are not suitable for this construction solution.
The base of the hidden plinth is an aluminum profile. It is a strong and durable material that will withstand high humidity, rapid temperature changes and mechanical shocks, and will serve for many years. Suitable for high traffic areas. Modification of molding depends on design ideas. You can choose from a profile with an MDF insert or a profile with a channel for LED lighting.
Advantages of using a hidden skirting board
The use of a hidden skirting board in a home or office has several advantages:
- The minimalist, modern look is not conspicuous in the interior at all, thanks to which it gives the opportunity to emphasize more important details.
- Space-saving in the room - furniture and other decorative elements can be placed close to the wall, avoiding gaps and freeing up a lot of space in the room.
- Forming one plane with the wall - hidden door strips create a perfectly smooth surface and are suitable for the installation of retractable doors.
- The ability to hide the smallest irregularities at the junction of the wall and floor.
- Prevents the accumulation of dust, dirt and impurities - does not require additional care and does not deform under the influence of chemicals.
- Possibility of hiding all communications in special channels or attaching LEDs to create a floating wall effect.
How to choose a modern molding for a hidden door
If you have decided on a skirting board hidden in the wall, you should know what to look for when choosing them. The fact is that the hidden strip resembles a constructor, in which the most important thing is to mount the profile correctly. And only later, after all the hard work is done, you can install the trim strip. So, when choosing a hidden skirting board, pay attention to the following parameters:
- Profile height: from 55 to 80 mm. The choice depends on the functional tasks to be performed: hide cables, install LED lighting or simply mount a hidden door. The price of the product depends on the size.
- Profile insert. Most often, they choose inserts for the skirting board made of MDF. They are easy to install and available in different colors: satin or matte coating, under wood or perfect white color. You can easily choose the option that will perfectly suit your project.
- Availability of the cable channel. It allows you to hide all communications or install an LED strip to create the effect of a floating wall.
Features of the installation of a hidden plinth
Hidden skirting board installation is one of the most difficult to perform and requires careful planning and attention to detail. For this reason, the installation of hidden skirting boards is only possible in a new building or during a general renovation. The peculiarity is that hidden plinths must be installed in the recess of the wall before starting plastering work. First, make accurate measurements and attach the profile to the wall very precisely. At the same time, the location of electrical outlets and ventilation openings, the specifics of the floor covering, the specifics of the room, etc., are taken into account in advance. Therefore, such work can only be entrusted to specialists who have the appropriate experience.
Buy hidden skirting boards
The skirting board performs at least two useful functions: it hides the technological connection between the floor covering and the wall and serves as a decorative element. At the same time, this element takes up some space and makes it difficult to clean the room. The main feature of modern trends in interior design can be considered minimalism, with its extremely rational organization of space. Skirting boards flush with the wall help to achieve this goal.
Types of hidden slats
Constructively, the hidden skirting board is extremely simple and consists of two elements: a basic L-shaped or T-shaped profile and an insert. Inserts can be made of aluminum, MDF, plastic or wood. Some models of skirting boards do not have connectors and external/internal corners.
Standard finish options for hidden aluminum trims include:
- No treatment.
- Anodized.
- White matt.
- Black mat.
It is possible to make various decorative inserts: wood-like, in RAL colors, in a loft style, etc. The basic possibilities, production time and price of non-standard inserts are discussed at the stage of ordering. Hidden mounting strips usually come in several standard sizes 55, 60 mm high. If, according to the designer's design, the plinth should be lower, it is possible to adjust the height.
Installation of the skirting board
The hidden skirting can be installed with screws, sealant or glue. The installation of the skirting board itself is extremely simple, but this is a case where simplicity proves to be deceptive. The base profile is installed after laying the floor before plastering the walls. And here the difficulties begin. To achieve the desired decorative effect, the floor and walls must be perfectly aligned. Therefore, the most reasonable decision is to entrust the installation to professionals.
After the base profile has been installed, the walls must be leveled with plasterboards, wall panels or plaster. This is followed by finishing works: puttying and painting. The decorative insert is installed at the end. The base profile of the skirting board does not necessarily have to be filled with an insert, because it is also an interesting decorative element in itself.
The use of a hidden skirting board - current options
There are several options for decorating with a hidden skirting board. The simplest of them is to create a uniform plane. To implement this solution, it is recommended to use an insert prepared for painting, that is, without finishing. The gap between the insert and the wall surface should be minimal. After the assembly is completed, the walls and inserts should be painted in the same color. It is important to note that the skirting board requires a waterproof paint so that it can be safely washed if necessary. Most often, hidden moldings are used to achieve the following options:
- Contrasting edging. In this finishing option, you can use the skirting board of the same configuration: aluminum and MDF skirting board, an insert prepared for painting. The degree of contrast is selected according to the designer's intention: sharp or smooth, slightly darker than the tone of the wall. Other possible solutions include the installation of inserts that match the floor or a shiny metal frame.
- Shadow Rift. This effect is achieved through the gap between the decorative insert and the base element. In this case, the insert is selected or painted in the shade of the walls.
- Wall "hanging" above the floor. To achieve this effect, an anodized aluminum profile without inserts is used, modified under plaster or plasterboard. When the wall surface is aligned with the upper edge of the skirting board, it hangs slightly above the floor, creating the illusion of no support. This technique is used not only indoors, but also in the decoration of external architectural elements.
- Hidden lighting. The skirting board not only masks and protects the connection between the floor and the wall, but also serves to mask cables. In addition to the cable channels, some models have additional channels for the LED strip. Lighting can be used to enhance the "floating" effect of the walls or serve as night lighting.
Advantages and disadvantages of skirting boards
Hidden moldings open up new possibilities in interior design. Their main advantages:
- Easy to care for.
- Universal, suitable for the kitchen, bathroom, any room, and even for finishing the external part of the façade.
- It does not take up usable space.
- Compatible with all floor and wall finishes
- Makes cleaning easier.
- They mask the wiring.
Of the most obvious disadvantages, it is worth mentioning the rather high cost and the requirement for accuracy in the geometry of the walls and floors.
How to choose a hidden skirting board
Summing up the possibilities of interior decoration, it is worth saying about the choice of skirting board:
- No coating. This is the most budget option recommended for design solutions using an insert.
- Anodized. Increases the resistance of the metal to external influences, has a light gray matte shade. It can be used with or without inserts, however, due to cost savings, it is generally recommended for installation without inserts in the kitchen or bathroom.
- Painted. Used in interiors with uniform surfaces and contrasting edges. Factory painting is available in several variants: gloss, structural, matte and semi-matt.
